Our story...

Hello! Abby here, creator and illustrator for Cards for Canines, a small business with a plan as simple as its name. We literally create pet portraits and greeting cards that serve to support our rescued canine (and feline!) friends. In a single sentence, we send regards and support rescues through donating a percentage of profits to humane animal shelters.

And here’s how it all began… In 2013 I was a fashion design graduate from the University of Cincinnati navigating my way through the corporate industry. Fashion offered a very positive creative outlet, and I still love accepting freelance positions today. However, I do find myself wondering how I ended up in design school instead of pursuing a veterinarian degree. I learned that the world has a way of working things out. Surprise, surprise… I quickly started obsessing over, you guessed it, ANIMALS! I was ready to somehow commit to animal welfare instead of concentrating 100% of my energy in fashion. Lucky for me, fashion school at DAAP (College of Design Architecture, Art, and Planning) offered some professional grade watercolor classes. I loved the whimsical nature and fluidity of this medium in regard to fashion drawing, and perhaps, I thought, that same style could be applied to animals. So, I painted my first dog... Thank you fashion school!

BROOKE

BROOKE

This was Brooke, my mom’s most loyal flat haired retriever. She was the lost and forgotten black dog at the SPCA. You know, one of the many dark colored, feared dogs that goes unwanted. Days before she would have been euthanized, my mom liberated Brooklyn from that shelter and gave her six years of comfort and bliss through family beach vacations, daily treats, and the most joyful emotional contact. When Brooke passed away, I wanted my mom to have a visual memory of that profound relationship, so I painted Brooklyn and used her angelic face as a greeting card to share with the world. My mom was elated.

That first painting/card package would be one of many, and I had found my way to make a lasting impact on the world of rescue. Cards for Canines was launched on Etsy in December of 2014. Within these first few years, we've been able to donate over $5,000.00 to local animals shelters in the Cincinnati area including the Southwest Ohio Doberman Rescue, Save the Animals Foundation, and Clermont Pets Alive. That donation amount is growing, and we are excited to reveal the updated number in December of 2018.

So why do I keep using 'we' instead of 'I'? Well, Cards for Canines wouldn't be in existence without my working and willing husband, Chad Wolf. He's the muscle behind public market setups as well as an overall support for this business endeavor.

Obviously I do have my own canine companion. Chad and I are the proud parents of Cyndal, our lovely and energetic Texan rescue mutt. I am convinced that there exists no better running coach than a fit and motivated dog. She is beautifully relentless in the morning and serves as a living stuffed animal at night. If everyone had a Cyndal dog, the world would be an active and joyful place. We certainly got lucky. (Oh, and she’s the Cards for Canines logo!)

Every single animal is a life to celebrate and we want to do just that through painting and preserving their sweet, emotional faces. Likewise, each rescue story is a beautiful success that deserves recognition, and we want to hear about it. So send us your photos and tell us your stories. We’ll be waiting!
